Overview
Eating disorders are a group of serious mental health conditions that have an effect on the way an individual eats. These disorders can lead to severe disturbances in an individual’s eating habits, body image, and physical and emotional health. Common types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and others. Eating disorders are more common than generally thought, and can range in severity across ages, genders, and cultures. Effective treatment is available, based on psychotherapy, medications, lifestyle changes and nutritional counseling. Eating disorders can have a negative influence on physical health, resulting in medical complications like infertility, organ failure, and heart disease. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of eating disorders in order to ensure early intervention and ensure the most successful recovery.
