Overview

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Early diagnosis of RA is essential for successful treatment and prevention of long-term damage. Diagnosis is made based on a physical exam, a medical history, and lab tests that measure levels of inflammation in the body. Blood tests, imaging studies such as X-rays, and joint fluid analysis can also be used to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for RA typically includes medications that reduce inflammation, joint pain, and stiffness. Physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and other treatments may also be used to help manage symptoms. Early diagnosis of RA is critical for providing effective treatment and slowing the progression of the disease.
