Overview
Dementia is an umbrella term that refers to a set of symptoms associated with a decline in cognitive function, which include impaired memory, language, problem-solving, and judgement. It is a progressive and degenerative condition that is seen in older adults and can also affect younger individuals. Dementia can impact a person’s ability to carry out everyday activities and carry out long-term plans and goals. Although there is no single cause for dementia, it can occur due to a variety of factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and head injuries. Diagnosis, treatment, and management of dementia are ongoing processes that involve many health professionals and caregivers. Early diagnosis and intervention can help improve quality of life and reduce symptoms, as well as help identify potential risk factors and slow the progression of the condition.
