Overview

Inflammation is a natural process in the body whereby white blood cells, oxygen and other nutrient-rich fluids are drawn to an injured area. It is the body’s normal response to infection, irritation or damage, and is important for healing and fighting off infection. Symptoms of inflammation include swelling, redness, warmth, tenderness and pain. It can also be present in chronic illnesses such as arthritis and asthma, and is an essential part of the body's immune response to injury or infection. While inflammation is important in helping the body heal and fight off infection, if it is left unchecked it can cause further damage. Treatments such as anti-inflammatory drugs and lifestyle changes help to reduce inflammation and can help to manage associated symptoms and improve overall health.
