Overview
Macrophages are white blood cells that play an important role in the body's immune system. They help to protect it from foreign pathogens and debris. Macrophages identify and engulf foreign particles, such as bacteria and viruses, and then break them down. This process helps the body to fight infections and other diseases. Macrophages also produce cytokines, which are molecules that help to regulate inflammation, cell growth, and other processes. Macrophages are essential for maintaining a healthy immune system and they are involved in many aspects of wound healing, tissue repair, and allergic reactions.
