Overview

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that affects the urinary system, which consists of the kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra. UTIs can be caused by a variety of bacteria and can be either acute or chronic. Symptoms of a UTI can include pain or burning during urination, frequent urination, and cloudy or bloody urine. UTIs can be treated effectively, but if left untreated, the infection can worsen and spread to the kidneys, potentially leading to more serious symptoms and complications. UTIs can be prevented through proper hygiene and drinking plenty of fluids.
