Biography
Istvan Arany is affiliated with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where his research focuses on risk factors that affect the course and progression of renal acute kidney injury (AKI), an established precursor of chronic kidney disease (CKD). His work has demonstrated that chronic nicotine exposure, which mimics the effects of long-term smoking, exacerbates renal ischemic injury in vivo and oxidant-mediated injury in vitro. His current research indicates that chronic nicotine, acting through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, amplifies and sustains renal injury-initiated inflammation, fibrosis, and vascular dysfunction that facilitate progression to CKD. His most-cited publication, "Simvastatin attenuates oleic acid-induced oxidative stress through CREB-dependent induction of heme oxygenase-1 in renal proximal tubule cells" (2015), reflects his broader interest in oxidative stress mechanisms in kidney pathophysiology.
