Overview
Infant nutrition is the practice of providing infants with the nutrients their bodies need to develop and grow. Proper nutrition during infancy is essential for the health and well-being of the baby and sets the foundation for good health throughout life. Breastmilk is recommended as the sole source of nutrition for infants for the first 6 months of life. As the infant begins to eat solid foods, complementary feedings of nutrient-dense foods that are appropriate for the infant’s age should be introduced. Good infant nutrition is associated with a variety of health benefits, including decreased risk of infection, improved physical growth and development, and better cognitive development. Infant nutrition should be tailored to the individual needs of each baby and parents and caregivers should consult a healthcare provider for guidance.
