Overview

Malnutrition is a condition that results from an imbalance between the nutrients a body needs and those it receives. It includes undernutrition, in which inadequate intake or absorption leads to wasting, stunting, underweight, and micronutrient deficiencies, as well as overnutrition, which contributes to overweight and obesity. In children, malnutrition is especially consequential because it impairs growth, immune function, and cognitive development, and many populations face a double burden in which undernutrition and obesity coexist. Diagnosis relies on anthropometric measures and clinical assessment, and management ranges from therapeutic feeding to broader nutritional and public health interventions. Pediatric Health and Nutrition publishes peer-reviewed research on childhood nutrition and its disorders. Reported studies examine the impact of intestinal helminth infections on malnutrition in school-age children, barriers to managing childhood obesity amid the double burden of malnutrition, the treatment and recovery of children with moderate and severe acute malnutrition, the severity of wasting in therapeutic feeding programmes, and the evolution of anthropometry in assessing malnutrition. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to malnutrition and the broader study of child nutrition, growth, and nutritional recovery.
