Overview
Undernutrition is an under-consumption of essential nutrients, causing an individual to lack the physical and mental energy needed to function normally. It can result from inadequate availability, utilization, and absorption of dietary nutrients, leading to health problems such as stunted growth and weakened immunity, cognitive and behavioural deficits, and increased risk of chronic diseases. Undernutrition is a major public health problem worldwide, primarily affecting children and women, and has long-term implications on individuals, families, communities, and countries. To reduce the devastating impacts of undernutrition, interventions such as education and policy changes, improved access to food, supplementation, and improved nutrition knowledge are essential. By addressing undernutrition, we can help people live healthier, longer lives.
