Overview
Platelets are small, disc-shaped cells that are found in the bloodstream and have a key role in the process of blood clotting. They help the body to form clots and stop bleeding after an injury or surgery. Platelets also help to repair damaged blood vessels and prevent infection. Platelets are essential for normal wound healing and are also important in cardiovascular disease as they help to reduce the risk of blood clots that can lead to heart attacks or strokes. Platelets are also used in medical procedures such as bone marrow transplants and cancer treatment.
